Phil Salas, AD5X
(formerly WN3BCQ, 1964)
It was probably October 1964. I was WN3BCQ and I had been licensed just four months - but I had recently passed my General test at the FCC office in Washington, DC. Since I was still waiting for my General ticket to arrive, I was still operating rock-bound CW in the 40 meter Novice band. Anyway, I called CQ on my Knight-Kit T-60 (receiving on my R100A) and was answered by VE3QE who was operating SSB. This was extremely exciting for me, and was my first (and I think only) cw-to-SSB QSO. I no longer even have the log books from my early days, but I’ll never forget his call.
