Steve Pink, KF1Y
(formerly Steve Pink, KF1Y)
I got my Novice in March of 1962 when I was 13 years old in Minneapolis. My Elmer, Art, was incredibly supportive and taught me what I needed to know along with the League's publications. I got on the air with a Heathkit DX-20 and a homebrew receiver that summer and passed my General the day after Thanksgiving. FCC tests were only given on Fridays in St. Paul, and the Friday after Thanksgiving was the first free Friday from school that year. Braved a snowstorm to get to the FCC office. I couldn't have done it without those months operating as a Novice.
